Have you ever wished you could turn back time and wish-away all the things you might have done that day? Or see what would happen if you did things differently or at slightly different times? Ground Hog Day is a movie that rates as one of my all time favorites.
Ground Hog Day is a film about Karma. There's no such thing as coincidence or luck, but there is Karma. The word Karma stems from the Sancrit “Kri” meaning “to act”. An Eastern idea, but essentially the same as the Christian "As ye sow, so shall ye reap" thing. It's also at the heart of the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you", versions of which can be found in many religions. Karma doesn't judge, condemn, punish or reward - If you do THIS, then THAT will happen. That's all. It describes your ultimate reality and where you are at any one time in the process of your existence. It can be used for understanding and seeing the rythmn of your life. For Bill Murray's character in Ground Hog Day it's more like John Lennon's "Instant Karma's Gonna Get You". He gets to see the infinite differing results of doing things differently in the same ever-repeated day. In reality, we aren't Bill Murray who knows he’s living the same day over and over; we are one of the other people in the movie who repeat the same cycle over and over and have no idea they're doing it. But the way to break out of repetitive loops, is same way that Bill Murray did it in Ground Hog Day; by coming to understand that he was the cause of his own unpleasant repetitions, and his actions effected others as well as himself. Changing his actions and being nice to everyone he meets instead of being an insecure tonic to himself, was his ultimate fix no matter how long it took to realise it and do it. Everthing has a cycle that begins and ends and starts again, and since we are a part of it then what we do effects the cycle. And since this is a forum about the links between our spirituality and our environment, it's probably a good place to point out the obvious - that the more of us there are on this planet, the more effect we will have on the environment, including the weather. We get a new version of the day, every day, and a new chance to get it right. But if we keep getting it wrong, the changes we cause will be devastating to us. The cycle will continue without us. Without giving any more of the story away you need to rent this movie and look for the hidden messages. Obviously it is a classic film, so if you watched it when you were younger and dismissed the repetitive daily saga, take another look. Our new day begins now… |
