My friend is inclined to stack some books into my hand after visiting her for a cup of a chai latte and a chat. This time she handed across 'Other People's Country'. She shared how much she had enjoyed reading the book and was guided to give me the book to read, as she knows I have a spiritual connection and appreciation of the dreamtime culture and its people. Over the years I have read several books about the aboriginal people in Australia; this is one of the better ones and deserves to be highly praised.
Maureen Helen has written a beautifully touching book about her experiences as a remote area nurse in an isolated aboriginal settlement in Western Australia. She shares with the reader the personal struggle she has to overcome in dealing with cultural issues, the harshness of her surroundings and the buerocractic outdated methods she had to endure while nursing her charges. I recommend this book as a must read if you are wanting to gain a greater appreciation of some of the struggles aboriginal communities face and the true grit and strength it requires to work in an isolated work environment. |

what an interesting book this sounds - having absorbed readings of Aboriginal history culture and spirituality - gaining an understanding from this person's life experience would be very rewarding too
